The team at KJH is dedicated to delivering excellence, innovative designs, and outstanding customer service in every project. With 120 years of combined experience we take pride in all aspects of our work. When we talk about the fruit of our labor we are referring to so much more than the finished product. We're referring to the partnership and full experience of what it means to work with KJ Heemstra Painting.
KJ Heemstra Painting, located in Grand Rapids MI, was established in1953 by Kenneth Jay Heemstra. Ken was asked to paint the exterior of a neighboring home and completed the job for a sum of money that might purchase a couple gallons of paint today. Unbeknownst to him, as he was probably just trying to earn money to purchase a cool car, he was launching a company that would span the time of seven decades. Ken has had a major impact on the painting industry as well with his innovations.
Our Logo
The KJH logo was newly created in 2024 to better represent who we are and as a symbol and reminder of our mission and values. We believe paint is a vital part of bringing a space to life. We also feel deeply that our work should also spread life, joy, and peace. When we walk away from a job, out goal is that we leave behind good fruits. We gained this perspective and set this goal by leaning into Psalm 128:2, Colossians 3:23-24, and Galatians 5:22-23.

Kevin Heemstra

I started my painting career 1978 at age 14 when I was recruited to sand and putty woodwork in a new home Dad was painting. I started spraying the clear finishes that summer and an learning to tape and paint walls the following year. I worked my way through High School and after that started in business with my Dad full time.

With a diverse background in both residential and commercial painting, I have a passion for the process and for creating an environment where our team can succeed. At KJ Heemstra Painting, I focus on precision, efficiency, and fostering a culture of excellence. By refining our methods and supporting our crews, I ensure every project meets the highest standards - delivering lasting quality with every bushstroke.

Growing up around KJ Heemstra Painting, I did my best to avoid picking up a brush - until one day, I was recruited for a big project. That was over eight years ago, and I've been painting ever since! At KJH, my goal is to provide high-quality, detail-oriented, and reliable painting services on every project. Whether residential or commercial, I take pride in transforming spaces and exceeding client expectations with every job.

We have a saying at KJHP, “We always do our best” and we have another “We aint paint’n a piano”. So, what do these seemingly inconsistent statements mean? Well, you wouldn’t use a multi-step fine finishing process to line the interior of an oil storage tank. Nor would you sandblast and spray coal tar epoxy on the surface of your Steinway. KJHP has the capability and experience in both these types of finishes, plus experience which runs the gamut of every imaginable paint finish in between. KJHP has used this experience on projects of every conceivable size and scale. This makes KJHP uniquely qualified to provide the quality and craftsmanship needed on YOUR project, and to meet and exceed YOUR expectations.

Deadlines come and deadlines go. Holidays, graduation and birthday parties, or beginning and end of seasons. Given a realistic and well-planned deadline, KJHP has never missed one. Consistency is more than meeting a deadline, it’s a reliable start time, and an “honest” day’s work. Consistency means grinding out a job in the face of adversity and bringing it to completion.
